Providing English classes is one method by which we promote PHOEBE's main aims, which include cultivating greater inclusivity of women and encouraging and facilitating the participation of BME women within the wider Suffolk community. There are currently around 20- 55 women on our attendance list register, and up to 15 attending our English classes once a week and we are continuing to promote and expand the group in various languages and regions. The English classes are currently completely run by a dedicated and qualified volunteer. An assessment of the women’s English is done by a qualified ESOL teacher when they start the group. The women come from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds such as Brazil, Romania, Portugal, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Turkey. Most of our students are not eligible for mainstream ESOL support, but still seek to participate in English conversation classes to help them get to grips with life in the UK. Although Suffolk is not listed as an area with a high level of need for English provision, other statistics have identified significant levels of deprivation in Ipswich. According to 2011 census, across the whole of Suffolk, Ipswich has the biggest number of people from BME backgrounds. There are over 2,500 people from Black Caribbean backgrounds, over 2,000 Polish people, 1,700 Bangladeshi and 1,800 Indians, along with high levels of people from Mixed European, Kurdish and African backgrounds. Our group has a wide age range, spanning from grandmothers to young mums. The youngest members of our free English classes are often tied down by childcare responsibilities but would like to seek employment once their children are old enough and thus want to improve their English now. The older members of the group often feel isolated due to their lack of English and are unable to be independent. Research has also shown that there are numerous barriers stopping BME women from accessing ESOL classes such as racism, discrimination, lack of appropriate services, lack of employability preparation before being granted status and a lack of information about benefits entitlements. We have therefore taken it upon ourselves to make provisions for English classes in Ipswich to assist in empowering women to improve their quality of life. If you are seeking professional spoken English classes for female adults, then call us to learn how you can begin participating in our English lessons!
